Acid techno was born out of the acid movement started when innovative Chicago producers including Nathan "DJ Pierre" Jones, Earl "Spanky" Smith Jr., and Herbert "Herb J" Jackson got their hands in the Roland 303 Bass Machine. Sleezy D is credited as the first producer to bring out an Acid house track with "I've Lost Control" in 1986.
While Acid House as a genre first evolved from Chicago's house music scene, much like Detroit with Techno, the genre was quickly picked up in Europe and the UK, and there it found the fertile ground it needed to thrive. Very quickly Acid House become the quintessential sound of the 90s UK dance scene and what later became known as "The Summer of Love".
From those beginnings, the acid sound has evolved and transitioned into a range of other genres. The distorted bass sounds of the Roland 303 and it's copies, tieing them all back to those early Chicago experiments and some of the most important and formative events in dance music history.
The acid sound has been integrated into styles as divers as it's House origins through to Punk, Jazz, Rap and my personal favourite Techno.
In many ways the merging of the musical creations of Chicago and Detroit it feel very "right" and certainly Acid Techno has captivated better DJs that me for over a quarter of a century, with the likes of Squarepusher, Aphex Twin, Reinier Zonneveld, Richie Hawtin and in more recent years Charlotte De Witte deeply integrating the acid sound into their work.
Here is a mix of some modern Acid Techno by my good self, with Deep and Dirty Techo 03
